As a historian of navigation, this project falls squarely within my research interests. I have also been working on Ships, Clocks & Stars: The Quest for Longitude and other events in our Longitude Season, which has drawn on the project findings. In addition, there are several specific areas I am interested in exploring in more detail during the project, including: the extent to which the Scilly Isles disaster of 1707 (under the command of Sir Cloudesley Shovell) was exploited by those calling for government action on the longitude question; Captain John Campbell and his role in the development of navigational instruments; and the stories behind some of the instruments in the Museum collections.
